Looking for an easy appetizer that takes almost no effort? Then look no further than these Würstel Savory Pies. Made with puff pastry (one of the most versatile items in your freezer), frankfurter sausages, cheese, and tomato paste, it tastes like a slice of pizza in every bite! Not only are they crispy and full of flavor, but they’re also easy to modify according to the ingredients you have on hand. Because you can serve them as snacks or appetizers, they’re perfect for parties, picnics, and potlucks. And, if you have any leftovers, they freeze very well. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

Würstel Savory Pies Variations

If you want to add your own twist on these savory pies, you can switch the sausages and cheese for other ingredients. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • roasted red pepper (chopped) and cream cheese
  • spinach and feta
  • smoked chicken and feta
  • tuna and roasted red pepper

This recipe can be used with other ingredients like smoked chicken, BBQ chicken, BBQ pork, and even cooked ground beef!

For a sweet option, spread the bottom layer with a chocolate spread (or a hazelnut spread like Nutella) and top with sliced bananas!

Tips

The puff pastry should be completely thawed so it’s pliable enough to roll out but still cold. The best is to leave it to thaw overnight in the fridge instead of leaving it on the kitchen counter at room temperature.  If the puff pastry is too warm, it won’t puff enough.

The oven should be hot (preheated to 180°). If you see the pastry squares brown too quickly (before the cheese has started to melt), you can place a sheet of foil loosely on top.

How to Store Würstel Savory Pies

Store the Würstel Savory Pies in an airtight container (in the fridge) for up to 2 days. Reheat the pastries in the oven to make them crispy again.

Can You Freeze Würstel Savory Pies

Yes, the baked puff pastry squares can be frozen for up to 3 months. Allow the pastry squares to cool completely, then wrap them with plastic wrap. Transfer the wrapped puff pastry squares to a freezer bag for freezing.
