Eggs are a great source of proteins and the most popular belief is that its yolks contain the greatest fraction of the protein than egg whites. Although nutritious, the fat content of egg yolks has caused many to believe that it is best to remove it from meals when on a weight loss plan. However, nutritionists counter the common practice saying egg yolks are highly nutritious and shouldn't be discarded.
Which do you think contains more protein: the egg white or egg yolk? If you thought of egg yolk, then you're only partially correct.
It may be hard to believe but egg whites actually contain the greater amount of proteins in an egg. While egg yolks are truly proteinous they only make up a small fraction of the eggs.
On the other hand, the egg white makes up about 70% of the egg so it contains more protein than its more colorful partner. The egg yolk also contains most of the vitamins and minerals in an egg which explains why it is commonly promoted as the healthier of the two substituents of an egg.
However, this doesn't mean that the common practice of removing the egg yolk to make a meal healthier is wrong. The yolk still contains more protein weight alongside plenty of vitamins and minerals. So, it is still an ideal protein source and is still commonly recommended to people trying to build muscle and overall strength.
So, what is the problem with egg yolks?
Despite the nutritious content of egg yolks, they still contain all the fat and dietary cholesterol in eggs which makes egg white a much purer source of protein and as you may already know, fat is considered a big NO when it comes to weight loss, albeit wrongly.
So, although the high fat content of yolks make them more flavorful, many people prefer to remove them for the perceived health benefits. However, recent studies from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health shows that there's a weak correlation between how much cholesterol you eat and how much you retain.
BOTTOMLINE
Egg whites and egg yolks have nearly the same amount of protein and neither are highly beneficial to your health. So, eating egg yolks is completely fine as long as you're not genetically predisposed to it.
