Loading the dishwasher may seem like a simple operation, but when it comes to particular objects, doubts can arise. Pots, pans, kitchen utensils… where do they go? Here's everything you need to know about where to put objects in the dishwasher and thus optimize space, obtaining a perfect wash.

1. Pots and Pans

Pots and pans are the heaviest and bulkiest items: they should be placed in the lower rack. Position them at an angle to allow water to slide off more easily and, where possible, avoid overlapping them to ensure effective washing. Grids and baking trays, if of the appropriate size, can be placed in the side racks, to avoid blocking the flow of water and dishwasher detergent, but making space for other objects.

2. Glasses, Cups and Mugs

Glasses, especially delicate ones, should be placed in the top rack to prevent them from breaking: make sure they are stable and do not touch each other. Remember that there are some glasses that should not be put in the dishwasher because they get ruined: usually these are crystal or decorated glasses, but it is always a good idea to check the label when you buy them, to understand what is the best method to wash them.

3. Dishes

The position of the plates in the dishwasher is essential to ensure effective washing and protect your dishes. Generally, the plates should be placed in the lower rack of the dishwasher, but it depends on their size: fruit and coffee plates can also go in the upper rack. Place the plates vertically, with the inside facing towards the center of the rack: this allows the water to reach all the surfaces and slide off more easily. Leave a little space between each plate to allow the water to circulate freely and reach every corner.

4. Cutlery

Cutlery goes in the appropriate compartment, with the handle facing down and the tip facing up: this way you will ensure 100% effective cleaning. You can place knives upside down, for safety when picking them up. Sometimes you find special spaces inside the cutlery basket for teaspoons, or for knives: use them, because they are designed to clean these cutlery items thoroughly.

5. Palettes and Various Utensils (Also in Plastic)

Spatulas, slotted spoons, ladles and other utensils should be placed horizontally on the top rack, between cups and glasses: avoid placing them in the cutlery container, because their size could cause problems for the dishwasher's propellers.

Plastic easily deforms at high temperatures: place plastic items in the top rack and make sure they are stable. Of course, before putting them in the dishwasher, read the manufacturer's washing instructions, which you can find on the label. Most plastic kitchen items today can be washed in the dishwasher without problems, but it is always a good idea to check.

6. Lids

Small and medium-sized lids can be placed in the top rack of the dishwasher, resting horizontally on one of the racks or cup holders: make sure they do not block the water spray. For larger lids, it is best to use the bottom rack: place them vertically, leaning them against one of the side walls of the rack or against other larger objects such as pots or pans. If the lid has a handle, make sure it does not block the water spray or interfere with other objects.

What About Cutting Boards?

Regardless of the material, cutting boards should never be put in the dishwasher for several reasons. High heat and harsh detergents can cause them to warp, especially wooden cutting boards. The wood fibers can spread, creating cracks that are easy for bacteria to hide in. Some cutting boards, especially those made of olive wood or bamboo, have natural antibacterial properties: washing in the dishwasher can compromise these properties. Plastic cutting boards, in particular, can scratch or warp, while bamboo cutting boards can discolor. Frequent washing in the dishwasher accelerates the wear and tear of the cutting board, reducing its lifespan.

Extra Tips

Here are some tips for the proper functioning of the dishwasher:

  • Don't overload it: leave space between objects to allow water to circulate freely.
  • Always check the filter. A clogged filter can prevent proper washing. Clean it regularly.
  • Use the right detergent. Choose a detergent that is suitable for your type of dishwasher and load.
  • Dishwasher salt is a critical component, especially if you live in an area with hard water.
  • Rinse aid helps reduce the surface tension of water, promoting rapid evaporation and preventing the formation of water droplets on dishes.
  • Clean your dishwasher regularly.
