You could consider watermelon a healthy food. It’s packed with nutrients and high in vitamins A, C, and, B. But while watermelon juice is certainly good for you, you did want to add a twist to this health drink and make it party-ready. Made with fresh watermelon, vodka, and wine, this watermelon cocktail not only looks good, but also makes quite the statement because it’s served in a whole watermelon!
It’s quick to make: hollow out a watermelon, blend the pulp and pour it back with wine and vodka. The watermelon is fitted with a tap so you can easily serve guests! This Watermelon Cocktail is everything you want in a drink: fruity, sweet, and just slightly boozy.
Watermelon – use a ripe melon as it will be sweeter.
Vodka – use high-quality vodka like Smirnoff or Absolut.
White wine – an easy-drinking wine like Chenin Blanc will work well.
Tap kit – you will find a tap kit at any plastic accessory store.
Prepare the watermelon by cutting off the bottom edge of the watermelon so it can stand upright on a table. Cut part of the top off. It should be big enough for a hand blender to fit through. Use a hand blender to blend the watermelon pulp from the inside.
Pour the pulp into a sieve and strain. Cut the side of the watermelon to fit the tap. Pour the liquid back into the watermelon together with the wine and vodka. Serve with ice and a slice of lemon.
For added flavor, add fresh herbs like mint or basil to the watermelon cocktail.
Use only high-quality wine and vodka.
Don’t add too much ice as it will make the cocktail watery.
Look for a heavy watermelon (the heavier, the riper it is). If it has a yellow spot on the surface, it means the watermelon spent more time ripening, so it will be sweeter. You can also tap it gently while holding it up. If it sounds hollow, it’s rip and ready to eat. You also want to look out for a watermelon that is slightly dull green, these will be sweeter.
Serve the watermelon cocktail with a light main (like grilled fish or chicken), or with canapes.
You can use other alcohol in this recipe: gin, rum, and tequila will all work.
To make an alcohol-free version, add apple juice instead of wine and vodka.
To make the cocktail sweeter, add agave nectar or honey to taste.
