This dessert might look fancy, but you can whip it up in a few minutes (perfect for unexpected guests!). They’re easy to make with ingredients you probably already have on hand. Simply Drizzle fresh apples with honey, then topped with puff pastry squares. Brush with egg and bake until golden. That’s all there is to it! You’re just a few steps away from a delicious dessert—with each bite you get a crispy pastry with honey apple flavor. Serve the Upside Down dessert on its own with powdered sugar, or add fresh cream, ice cream, a drizzle of chocolate, or caramel sauce! With a roll of puff pastry in the freezer, you will always be ready with a delicious dessert in a fraction of the time!

Tips

Any red baking apple will work, look for Honeycrisp and Pink Lady, as these will give the best results.

Use store-bought puff pastry from the frozen foods section. The pastry should be completely thawed so it’s pliable enough to roll out but still cold. The best is to leave it to thaw overnight in the fridge instead of leaving it on the kitchen counter at room temperature.  If the pastry is too warm, it won’t puff enough. To make sure you get a nice puff, place the formed flowers in the fridge for half an hour.

If you want, you can leave out the puff pastry, and use crescent roll instead.

To make sure the apples are evenly sliced, you can use a mandoline.

If you want to make the dessert ahead of time, you can assemble and roll the braided pastry, and keep it unbaked in the fridge. Bake before serving.

If you want to make a large batch, place the apple slices in a bowl of cold water with a splash of lemon juice to prevent browning.

Don’t feel like powdered sugar? Top the Upside Down Dessert in other ways:

Drizzle with a cream cheese glaze: mix 4 ounces of cream cheese, room temperature, 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar (or powdered sugar), sifted 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, and 3 to 4 tablespoons milkToss with cinnamon sugar made from 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon. Drizzle with chocolate sauce or caramel sauce (like dulce de leche)

How to Store Upside Down Dessert

Leftovers can be stored at room temperature (in an airtight container) for up to 2 days. Reheat it in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
