Fairytales aren't always the stuff of dreams; they contain figments of reality too. Such is the case of this extremely rare apple known for its startlingly dark purple colour. The unusual hue makes it reminiscent of one of the world's favorite romantic tales, 1937 animation film, "Snow White and The Seven Dwarves" known for its infamous prop, the poisonous apple.
The black diamond apple originates from Tibet but it's not actually black. Instead, its skin is a dark purple hue that makes it starkly different from other varieties. You won't find this apple just anywhere, which adds to the mystery surrounding it.
The rare variety is from the family of Hua Niu apples (also known as the Chinese Red Delicious). The unique apples owe their color to their native geography in Nyingchi, a small city in the mountains of Tibet, where they receive a lot of ultraviolet light during the day but the temperature fluctuates dramatically at night, causing the skin to develop a deep, dark color.
In case you're wondering what their flesh look like inside, well, it's not black. The flesh inside is white and bright like any other apple.
Although they might not look like it, black diamond apples are safe to eat and also contain numerous nutrients like other common varieties. However, expert researchers report that the dark shade of their flesh doesn't make them more nutritious than others.
That doesn't make the special apples less expensive!
Black Diamond apples are produced within a very limited window and are usually available for just two months each year. In China, they are only sold in high-end supermarkets and typically packaged in gift boxes. An individual apple can't sell for less than $7, and can be as pricey as $20 each!
