The main ingredient of the dry shampoo is an oil absorbing substance such as corn starch or arrowroot, which helps to absorb excess oil from the scalp and leave it clean. A wet-dry shampoo is another type of dry shampoo that contains a quick evaporating liquid like any alcohol such as vodka or rum. Here are the recipes to create your own dry shampoo for light or dark hair.

Basic dry shampoo. Mix 5 drops of any essential oil, like lavender with ¼ cup of arrowroot powder or organic starch. You may store this mixture in an airtight container and apply it with an old makeup brush on the roots or the oily part of the scalp. This combination works best for light colored hair. For dark hair, you may prepare a mixture of essential oil with 2 tablespoons of arrowroot or corn starch and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder. To turn this into a wet shampoo add some alcohol or water to the above recipe.

Spray shampoo. Mix 1 cup of warm water with ¼ cup of corn starch or arrowroot, ¼ cup of alcohol, and a few drops of any essential oil in a spray bottle and shake the mixture really well for it to blend nicely. Shake it well again before use and spray this wet dry shampoo on the roots or oily parts of the scalp. Let the shampoo dry and style as per your preference.

It is best to keep this dry or spray shampoo for at least 2 hours on the scalp for it to absorb the oil very nicely.
