This fritter recipe is made with a dough batter, similar to that of oliebollen. The ingredients are mixed to create a soft dough, then left to rest for about 3 hours. Small balls of dough are then fried until golden brown and cooked through. Follow our easy-to-follow recipe to make these delicious fritters at home and enjoy the melt-in-your-mouth goodness with each bite. Serve with your favorite sauce or ice cream, and you have a complete dessert.  And seriously, who doesn’t love a good fritter?

Fritter Variations

If you don’t like the honey and sugar-sprinkled fritters, you can also make glazed ones. To make a glaze, simply mix together ½ cup melted butter, 2 tsp vanilla extract, 4 cups powdered (fine) sugar, and just enough milk to thin the mixture out. Allow the fritters to cool slightly before you dip them in the glaze.

Tips

Make sure to grease the string before using it. This will prevent the dough from sticking.

It’s important to fry the fritters at the right temperature—aim for about 350°F. Don’t make your oil too hot, otherwise, the donuts will burn before the dough is cooked through. The oil should also not be too cold, otherwise, the donuts will absorb too much oil, making them oily.

Use a neutral oil suitable for frying at higher temperatures. Canola oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, or corn oil will be suitable. If you want to reuse the oil, allow it to cool, and strain it. You can use it a few more times for more batches of fritters.

To make sure the fritters are all equally-sized, you can also use an ice cream scoop. After you scoop the batter, flatten the surface, and then release the batter into the dough. Spray the ice cream scoop with cooking oil spray now and then.

Similar to how oliebollen is made, you can add chopped apples, raisins, or cranberries to the flour batter.

Can I Make Fritters in the Airfryer?

This recipe won’t work in the Airfryer because the batter is too thin.

What To Serve with Fritters

Serve them as we did: covered with honey and sprinkled with granulated sugar. You can leave out the honey and simply dust them with powdered sugar.

You can also serve them with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or custard.

How To Store Fritters

The fritters are best served fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container (at room temperature) for up to 3 days.

Can I Freeze Fritters

Yes, you can! Allow the fritters to cool completely, then transfer to a resealable bag. Freeze for up to 2 months.

Ingredients

Warm water
350ml
Yeast
7g
Sugar
1 tbsp

Instructions

In a bowl mix together warm water, sugar, and yeast.

While the oil heats up, prepare a string by tying it across the top of the pan. The string will be used to pinch off pieces of dough.

Grease the string with a bit of oil.

Transfer the doughy batter to a clean plastic bottle. Fry small balls of dough until golden brown and cooked through.

Dip the fried balls in honey, then coat them with sugar.
