To many of us it would never come to mind, but among the alternative uses of sugar there is also the possibility of spreading it on the wounds to speed up the recovery. An United Kingdom research has proven that sucrose has an excellent healing power if applied locally where it is needed most.
This was confirmed by a team led by Moses Murandu of the University of Wolverhampton in the West Midlands who had already experienced this original use of sugar as a child. The man, raised in Zimbabwe, was actually used to utilize salt to disinfect the wounds but sometimes he had at his disposal the most expensive sugar that seemed to be even more effective as well as a better remedy than salt, because it did not burn during the application.
After becoming a nurse, however, he realized that the sugar was not considered a disinfectant remedy for wounds and so, after becoming a senior nursing professor, he decided to complete a first pilot study on the potential of this ingredient applied precisely on wounds.
Murandu explained that in order to treat a wound and make it heal faster, it is sufficient to apply a good quantity of sugar on it and then cover it with a gauze. The method would be effective both on animals and on men.
The researcher said that one of his patients had an amputated leg part with a wound that had not yet healed completely. It would have been sugar to ensure a clear improvement (he used an entire package at the beginning and only 4-5 teaspoons at the end of the experiment). Thanks to the use of this ingredient, Murandu assures, the recovery has been much quicker.
