We love banana recipes: bananas are abundant, easy to peel, and even easier to eat (it’s like nature’s takeaways)! From banana bread to smoothies, there are an almost endless number of ways to incorporate them into your dishes. But this time, we are celebrating the fruit in its simplest form. Fried bananas are an easy dessert recipe and something you can also enjoy as a snack.
Each bite is sweet and buttery. The texture is great too. The fried bananas have crispy, caramelized edges with a creamy inside. Making it is so easy too! Soak the bananas in lime water (this prevents browning) and fry until crispy and golden. Top with caramel and voila!
Limes – use key limes or finger limes.
Green bananas – green bananas will be firmer, you can also use plantains.
Sugar – use brown sugar to make the caramel, it gives the best flavor.
Start by soaking the bananas (this prevents banana browning). Peel the bananas and add to a bowl of saltwater together with the limes. Allow standing at least 30 minutes. Slice the soaked bananas and fry in a pan with hot oil until golden brown and crispy. Allow the fried bananas to drain on a paper towel or kitchen towel.
Now make the caramel. Add the water to a [an, together with brown sugar and butter and cook until it thickens. Pour over the bananas and serve immediately.
You can make crispy banana chips in the Airfryer too! Line the Airfryer basket with parchment paper, then air fry at 325°F for 15 minutes, flipping the chips halfway.
Feel free to sprinkle the banana chips with cinnamon sugar instead of using a caramel.
Unlike most other banana recipes, where ripe bananas are preferred, you don’t want to use them in this recipe, otherwise they will become too mushy.
Fried bananas as a dessert with caramel and whipped cream, or as a snack with cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar.
Fried bananas are delicious to serve with granola and yogurt as breakfast too!
But don’t let that stop you! These are also great with ice cream, pancakes, French toast, and oatmeal.
To make it vegan, replace the butter with coconut oil or vegan butter.
