Homemade marshmallows are a real treat to make and to eat. Once you start making your own, you will wonder why you ever bought ones from the store. It’s easy to add your own flavoring and they taste so much better! You can also make them in different colors and cut them into cute shapes!
These Orange Marshmallows are so easy to make. They have a zesty flavor (thanks to real orange juice and zest) and have a light, soft and fluffy texture. To make it, you only need a handful of ingredients: gelatin, sugar, and oranges. Store-bought marshmallows will soon be a thing of the past!
Gelatin – this is needed to set the marshmallows and create the right texture.
Powdered Sugar – use superfine sugar; don’t use granulated sugar as this will result in a grainy texture.
Corn Flour – cornstarch, not cornmeal!
Oranges – use fresh, unwaxed oranges
Grease a square baking mold and sprinkle it over with a mixture of corn flour and icing sugar. Zest the oranges, and set the zest aside. Juice the oranges and then strain them through a sieve to remove the pulp. Mix the orange juice with gelatin and let it rest for 15 minutes.
Make a syrup from the sugar and the orange juice. Mix the syrup with the gelatin mixture. Add orange zest and food coloring and mix to combine. Pour the mixture into the mold and sprinkle over more icing sugar mixture. Allow to set, cut into rectangular pieces and sprinkle over more icing sugar.
Don’t leave out the gelatin, it’s necessary to create the right marshmallow texture.
You can use glucose or corn syrup. Note that if you use liquid sweeteners, you will need to alter the water ratios slightly for this recipe to work.
The sugar syrup should be cooled slightly before you add the gelatin. If it’s too hot, the gelatin will lose its setting abilities and your marshmallows won’t set properly.
The marshmallows are perfect for toasting, and will also taste delicious in hot chocolate.
While you can use a normal baking pan for this recipe, a silicone mold works better as it’s easier to remove the marshmallows.
Don’t rush the setting process, the longer these homemade marshmallows set, the better!
Store the orange marshmallows in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Don’t place them in the fridge or freezer, this will cause them to absorb excess moisture and they will become sticky.
You can even sprinkle a bit of cornflour in the container to keep them dry.

Cut the marshmallows with a sharp chef’s knife for nice clean cuts. To make the cutting process easier, wipe your knife with butter or oil. This will prevent the knife from sticking, and it will create smooth lines on the marshmallows.
