As communicated by Ada (American dental association), the scientific evidence of a real effectiveness for dental health of this method is still insufficient and the current reports on the potential health benefits have clear limits.
However, among those seeking to sell coconut oil and those who want to emphasize the effectiveness of certain natural remedies, it seems that there are numerous benefits. Let’s know better the history of a popular treatment method.
The cleansing of the body thanks to sunflower oil was practiced in the countries of origin especially to combat acute and chronic diseases, such as stomach, lung or liver disorders, diseases of the nervous system, disorders of the otolaryngology and skeletal muscle, fatigue, sleep disorders, infections and dental and gingival diseases.
And it is not only the body that benefits from this purification that starts from the mouth: according to the promoters of the oil pulling spirit and mind get vacant, benefiting from a conscious practice regarding what enters and leaves the organism, what nourishes positively and what hurts.
As is known, the use of oil to clean the body externally and internally is also knowledge and practice of the healing methods of Indian Ayurveda, which uses other products than sunflower oil and other methods.
In general it can be said that various traditional medicines have accepted and known similar methods for the purification and detoxification of the organism.
Oil pulling is simply a practice of cleaning and hygiene of the mouth and oral cavity, by rinsing with oil. The benefits of this practice would be found first of all on teeth and gums, but also in the oral cavity in the treatment and prevention of bronchitis, cough, sore throat, hoarseness and cold, through the elimination of the bacteria that cause them.
The oil pulling would also help to remove excess mucus from paranasal and maxillary sinuses, preventing halitosis and the formation of dental and gingival diseases, including tartar and caries. Moreover, as seen, oil pulling can have positive effects on skin diseases, nervous and rheumatic disorders.
Through the use of oils, primarily sunflower oil, not a cheap one but cold pressed and of good quality, even better if coming from organic crops. To practice oil pulling you can also use sesame oil, olive oil or coconut oil (the latter very popular in the USA and England) or aloe vera gel.
It is a detoxifying and personal care technique that can be practiced safely at home, in a simple, painless, economical and practical way.
On an empty stomach and before brushing your teeth, preferably in the morning – if you want you can practice before lunch, dinner or just before bedtime, always fasting – put a spoon of cold-pressed vegetable oil in your mouth.
You start moving it slowly in the mouth, then you "chew" and then you slide between your teeth, pushing it back and forth. It will be noted that the rinsing starts very dense, due to the viscosity of the oil, but it becomes increasingly fluid and liquid, since the oil mixes with the saliva.
The practice would like to continue with the rinsing for about 10-15 minutes, but, especially the first times, you will realize that already five minutes are many. Therefore, support your organism, which will gradually become accustomed to this hygienic practice.
The oil is then spit out, you should not absolutely swallow, and proceed with a nice rinsing of the mouth with warm water and brush your teeth and tongue.
You cannot take liquids except water the twenty minutes later and before the oiling pulling. In doing so, the oil works by collecting bacteria and toxins and taking them out of the body.
Oil pulling, a daily practice, can be practiced several times during the same day, especially during periods of illness, cooling, cough or sore throat.
The only side effects may concern particular reactions of the organism following the successful detoxification process. The more the organism is intoxicated, the more the detoxification crisis can be strong, including fever, eruptions, mucus secretions that will disappear with the practice.
Before any practice of alternative medicine, even if apparently bland, it is always good to consult the opinion of an expert in the field, naturopathic or doctor, who will be able to advise you in every case.
A similar practice, but not the same, is mentioned in the Ayurvedic method within the basic text of Ayurveda Charaka Samhita. "Keeping of oil gargle provides strength in jaws and voice, development of the face, maximum taste and relish of food. One does not suffer from the dryness of the throat, lip cracking and teeth become firmly rooted. The teeth do not ache or become sensitive and can chew the hardest food items ". Charaka Samhita Ch V -78 to 80.
Also nice is the video example of a young Indian girl author of the blog "The beauty reel".
There is also a website dedicated to Oil pulling, it's called Oilpulling.org. The South Indian doctor Dr. Rao began to study and spread this therapy after being inspired by the publications of the Russian physician Dr. Med Karch.
