Here’s Why Cherries Are Always Expensive — Even When They Are In Season

Cherries are one of the most prized fruits available; they are not only delicious, but they offer quite a few health benefits as well. It would be nice to have cherries available for consumption all year round, but like many other fruits, they have seasons in which they thrive. But, most importantly, they are very expensive to obtain.

The per-pound price of cherries is exceptionally high, and the cherries add up in weight rather quickly. Most people who have experienced the cherry sticker shock wonder about the cause of this overpriced nature. There are a number of reasons that have led to the high prices of cherries, and these reasons are explained below.

One of the most important reasons cherries are so expensive is that they select climates where they can grow, which is why you may have observed that some farmers don't even grow their own cherry trees.

Even those who truly love cherries have a hard time growing these fruits in their personal yards. Since cherries can only be grown in select climates, this makes the demand for them even higher. It is noticeable that when you live in areas where cherries are readily available and there are lots of cherry farms, prices of cherries may be a little lower. But when you live in a cold climate where there is no chance a cherry tree could make it, you will probably pay even more for fresh cherries.

Another reason cherries are so expensive is that they have a very short season; they are only available for a short period of time, unlike most fruits and vegetables that have an extended season where they are introduced and then eventually fade out.

Cherries only bloom for a very short period of time, and at the time these cherry trees produce their crop, and the product makes it to the stores, there are really only a few more weeks of the cherry season left. Also, Cherries simply come and go quite quickly, so it is rare to find cherries on sale or offered at a low price.

The reason cherries are so expensive is because fungicides are required to keep the fruits in good shape and not lose them completely. In other words, not all cherries are going to be organic cherries and, as a matter of fact, you'd have to spend extra cash to get organic cherries.

In conclusion, farmers can do everything right when cultivating cherries, but they have no control when it comes to the weather, and considering how cherries have little to no resilience, it is difficult to get them in perfect shape with high or low rainfall. A lot of time and effort is invested into cherry farming, and therefore it is essential to keep the pricing at a reasonable level for the farmers.
