In rare cases, food allergy will trigger a serious reaction known as anaphylaxis. This can lead to potentially fatal signs and symptoms some of which include:

  • Constriction and tightening of the airways
  • Difficulty breathing due to clogged airways or a swollen throat
  • Shock with a severe drop in blood pressure
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness

Such symptoms call for emergency treatment as if left untreated, they can cause a coma or death.

What Causes Food Allergy?

It happens when the human body makes the mistake of thinking a particular food or substance it contains is harmful to the body. In response, the immune system rushes to defend the body by releasing an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) to neutralize the allergen.

When you eat that same food or substance again the antibodies sense it and will get the immune system to release histamine and some other chemicals into the bloodstream. The chemicals are what cause the allergic symptoms.
