Eggs are a great source of protein and are basic ingredients in the culinary world but have you ever wondered how much they weigh? If you love eggs and are a stickler to a particular calorie intake then you must know. We did the research so you won’t have to and here’s what we found.

Eggs are one of the most consumed foods globally, especially when it comes to making breakfast. There are different animals in the world today that lay eggs including the chicken.

When it comes to chicken eggs, there are various weight classes that are defined by their sizes. Some could be jumbo, extra-large, large, medium, small or even the peewee size.

Jumbo eggs weigh a whopping 2.5 oz (70.9 g) and per dozen, they can weigh up to 30 oz (850.8 g). The weight of an extra-large egg is 2.25 oz (63.8 g), and per dozen, they weigh 27 oz (765.44 g).

For large-sized eggs, the weight is 2 oz (56.7 g) per egg, and per dozen, they weigh 24 oz (680.39 g). A medium egg's weight is 1.75 oz (49.6 g), and a small egg weighs 1.5 oz (42.5 g). The peewee chicken egg has the smallest size at 1.25 oz (35.4 g).

Usually, for cooking or baking, extra large or large eggs are preferred. Medium eggs are often the smallest eggs available in a grocery store, along with large and extra-large eggs.

Egg sizes like small eggs, peewee eggs and jumbo eggs are rare to find.

What A Large Egg Weighs Without A Shell

An egg’s shell acts as a layer of protection for the contents of an egg. For a fertilized egg, the eggshell protects the growing organism within but for an unfertilized egg, the shell holds the contents inside the egg.

According to the experts, the shell of an egg usually makes up 8-9% of its overall weight. The weight of a large egg without the shell is just 1.76 oz (G0 g).

How Much An Egg Yolk Weighs

The yolk of an egg provides different nutrients and health benefits, however, they also contain a large amount of cholesterol. This is why it is not uncommon in baking to see the yolk and the whites separated in the initial stages of the baking process.

The yolk takes up one-third of the weight of the egg however depending on the size of the egg, the weight of the yolk usually varies. The weight of yolk of a large egg will weigh 0.63 oz (18 g) while the yolk of a medium egg weighs around 0.45 oz (14 g).

Since a yolk makes up one-third of an egg, the white of an egg has the remaining two-thirds. The average weight of an egg white also differs depending on how big the egg is. For instance, the average weight of the white of a large egg will be approximately 1.06 oz (30 g) and 0.9 oz (26 g) for a medium-sized egg.
