Looking for a fun new way to make fruit skewers? This recipe is made with the syringe method which results in perfectly rounded fruit skewers. This recipe is easy, versatile, and vitamin-packed! Serve as a colorful, sweet appetizer, side, or dessert. You can even add a delicious dip or a chocolate drizzle.
To make it you will need a variety of fruits (see our suggestions on which ones to choose), and a syringe. With the syringe, it’s easy to create skewers in one easy go! This is a great recipe to keep the kids busy—the perfect project for the weekend or school holidays.
We used a variety of fruits for this recipe: bananas, melons, kiwis, watermelon.
You will also need skewers and a syringe. The syringe is great to make round fruit pieces.
Prepare the syringe by cutting off the spout. Prepare the fruits by cutting them into medium-thick slices. To make sure that fruits don’t brown, you can soak them before you make the skewers. Make a mixture of 1 cup water with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and soak for up to 10 minutes.
Use the syringe to cut several slices from each fruit. Fit a skewer in the center to form a skewer. (There’s no need to soak the skewers, as they won’t be placed on a grill). Squeeze the end of the syringe to release the fruit skewer. Serve with a dip of your choice.
If using banana, add it right before serving.
To make mini skewers, use a smaller syringe.
You can also leave out the dip and simply drizzle the fruits with melted chocolate.
There are so many dips and sauces you can serve with fruit skewers. Try any of the following:
These fruit skewers can be made ahead of time. Just remember that if you use apples, bananas, or pears, they will start browning. If you want to make the fruit skewers ahead of time, it’s best to not use these fruits.
Using a variety of fruits means you can play around with different colors and textures. We like using the following:
Melon – watermelon, cantaloupe, etc.
Grapes – red, green, or black. If using grapes, remember to slice them in half lengthwise if you’re making them for children to prevent a choking hazard.
Berries – strawberries, blueberries, blackberries
Kiwis – peel before using
Pineapple
Also try interesting fruits like dragon fruit or star fruit.
Store the fruits in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 3 days.
