Crispy fried mushrooms might be a steakhouse classic, but there’s no reason why you can’t make them at home. It’s an easy appetizer recipe to make when they're in season. The mushrooms are golden brown and crispy on the outside while being tender and juicy on the inside.

Once you see how easy it is to make them, you’ll wonder why you haven’t tried your hand at it earlier. The mushrooms are dipped in an egg wash, then covered with breadcrumbs and fried until golden. As easy as that. Make sure to serve them immediately.

Fried Mushroom Ingredients

Mushrooms – look for small button mushrooms as they will fry more evenly.

Eggs – use fresh eggs.

Parmesan cheese – added for flavor.

Flour – all-purpose or cake flour will work.

Breadcrumbs – use storebought or homemade breadcrumbs.

Oil for frying – Use a neutral oil suitable for frying at higher temperatures like canola, peanut, sunflower, or corn oil.

How To Clean Mushrooms

Clean the mushrooms with a slightly damp paper towel. Alternatively, you can rinse the mushrooms under running water, but do not soak them. Make sure they are dry before using them.

How To Make Fried Mushrooms

Clean the mushrooms by wiping them or giving them a quick rinse. Make sure they’re dry before using, otherwise they won’t crispy up and will become soggy. Cut the mushrooms in half—this will help to cook more evenly.

Set up a breading station with eggs, flour, and breadcrumbs. Beat the eggs with milk and Parmesan. Don’t leave out the eggs, they act as a binder for the breadcrumbs. Dip the mushrooms in flour, then the eggs, then finally in the breadcrumbs. Place the covered mushrooms on a baking sheet while the oil heats up.

Pour the vegetable oil, garlic, and parsley into the pan. Don’t make your oil too hot, otherwise the breading on the mushrooms will burn before the mushrooms are cooked through. Use a thermometer to heat the oil to about 350°F. Add the mushrooms and fry for about 3-5 minutes until crispy, golden and cooked through.

Tips For Making Crispy Fried Mushrooms

If you want to make them extra crispy, use Panko (Japanese-style) breadcrumbs.

You can also use a beer batter. The beer is unique in that it provides carbon dioxide and alcohol, both of which helps to create a better batter. This creates a light batter that also stays crispy for longer. Use a lager for best results.

These crispy fried mushrooms can also be made in the Airfryer. After breading the mushrooms, spray them with cooking oil spray and fry in the Airfryer at 350°F for 15 minutes, turning halfway.

What To Serve With Fried Mushrooms

Serve the fried mushrooms as an appetizer with your favorite sauce. Try any of the following sauces: ranch dressing, barbecue, ketchup, or honey mustard sauce.

How To Store And Reheat Fried Mushrooms

Store leftovers in the fridge (in an airtight container) for up to 3 days.
