Looking for a sweet treat for your next get-together? These Fried Apple Rolls are not only tasty, but they’re easy to make, and will look pretty on a plate! But don’t think a pretty dessert means you need fancy ingredients! Only a few pantry staples will do: grabe the flour, yeast, sugar, eggs, milk, and of course, apples. To make it, you create a dough, filled with sliced apples, and fry. It couldn’t be easier. After frying, you dust them with powdered sugar, and enjoy. The fried apple rolls are somewhere between a fried doughnut and apple pie…and who doesn’t love those two desserts? So why not have them in one bite?
Sprinkle the apple slices with ground cinnamon before rolling the dough.
Rolling the fried apple rolls in sugar adds a nice crunch, but there are other ways to enjoy them. You can leave out the sugar at the end, and try any of the following:
Drizzle with a glaze. Whip up a quick and easy glaze icing by whisking together 2 cups of confectioners’ sugar, 2 tbsp butter, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and up to 4 tsp milk. Drizzle and spread over the fried apple rolls.Drizzle with melted white chocolate.Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with crushed pecans.
For these Fried Apple Rolls, it’s best to use firm, tart apples. Look for Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, or Granny Smith.
First make the dough. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and sugar. Add the yeast and whisk again. In another clean bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add these dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and mix. Knead to form a smooth dough. Rest the dough for one hour.
Prepare the apples. Peel and core the apples and slice them into thick slices.
Assemble the dessert. Roll out the dough and place the apple slices on top of the dough. Roll up the dough, then cut it into thick slices. Fry the apple rolls until golden.
Store the fried apple rolls in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or Airfryer.
The Fried Apple Rolls will become soft, so they are best eaten immediately! If you want to do some prep work beforehand, slice the apples and place them in a bowl of water with a splash of lemon juice (to prevent browning). Make the dough, and rest in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble the dessert.
