What is Stuffed Eggs and Cheese Toast?

The egg-in-a-hole toast, also known as "egg in the basket" or "toad in the hole," has a long-standing place in comfort food history, with its origins often traced back to British and American kitchens. The concept of cooking an egg inside a piece of bread became popular in the early 20th century, though variations of this dish exist globally. In Italy, there’s a similar dish called "uova al purgatorio," where eggs are cooked in a bed of tomatoes, while in France, croque madame adds a fried egg to a classic ham-and-cheese sandwich. These toasts and their variations offer a fun, simple way to incorporate eggs and bread, allowing for regional adaptations with local ingredients. Regardless of where you are, this type of toast remains a timeless and beloved comfort food around the world.

Tips for The Best Stuffed Eggs and Cheese Toast

  • Opt for a sturdy, thick slice of bread like sourdough or whole wheat. It holds up better when frying and gives a crispier edge.
  • Make sure your pan is hot but not too hot—medium heat is ideal to get a crispy golden crust on the bread while allowing the egg to cook through without burning.
  • Fresh eggs will give you a richer flavor and a better texture. Crack them into a small bowl first to avoid any broken yolks or shells sneaking into the bread.
  • Let the egg set slightly before adding cheese so it melts evenly without making the bread soggy.
  • Flip the toast gently to avoid breaking the yolk and ensure both sides are golden brown, crispy, and delicious.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment—try adding spinach, bell peppers, or bacon for extra flavor and texture.

What Can I Substitute the Cheddar Cheese With?

You can substitute cheddar cheese with options like mozzarella, Swiss, Gouda, or even gruyère. Each of these cheeses will melt well and offer different flavor profiles, allowing you to customize the dish to your taste.

Can I Add Other Vegetables to The Toast?

Yes, you can definitely add other vegetables to the toast! Try adding spinach, bell peppers, tomatoes, or mushrooms for extra flavor and nutrition. Just be sure to chop them finely so they cook evenly along with the rest of the ingredients.

Can I Bake These Toasts? Or Make Them in An Air Fryer?

Of course! Simply assemble the ingredients as usual, place them on a baking sheet, and bake at 180°C (350°F) for about 10-12 minutes, or until the egg is set and the bread is golden and crispy. Baking offers a hands-off approach and ensures even cooking.

Can I Make These Toasts Ahead of Time?

These toasts are best enjoyed fresh, as the egg and bread may lose their texture when made ahead. However, you can prep the ingredients—like chopping the veggies and cutting the bread—so everything is ready to assemble and cook quickly when needed.

What Can I Serve With These Toasts?

These toasts pair well with a side of fresh fruit, salad, or even hash browns for a more filling meal. You can also serve them with avocado slices or a light yogurt parfait to balance the richness of the toast.

Can I Freeze These Toasts?

It's not recommended to freeze these toasts, as the egg and bread can become soggy and lose their texture when thawed. They are best enjoyed fresh, but you can freeze prepped ingredients like chopped vegetables and then assemble and cook the toasts when ready.

How to Store Stuffed Eggs and Cheese Toast

To store leftovers, place the toasts in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1-2 days. When reheating, use a skillet on low heat or an oven at 180°C (350°F) to restore crispness without making the bread soggy. Avoid microwaving, as it can result in a rubbery texture.

Ingredients

Bread
2 slices
Eggs
2
salt
1/2 tsp
Pepper
1/2 tsp
Thyme
1/2 tsp
Chopped onion
1 tbsp
Chopped Green onion

How to Make Eggs and Cheese Toast

Cut out the middle part of the bread slice.

Place it on a preheated pan and then  pour the egg into it (previously cracked inside of a small bowl).

Sprinkle the egg with salt, pepper, thyme and the chopped carrots, onions and green onions as it cooks.

Once the egg has cooked halfway through, place the slice of cheddar cheese on top of it.

Top with the cut out piece of bread, and let it fry on both sides until it turns crispy and golden.

Once it has crisped up on both sides, take it away from the pan and serve.

Enjoy!
