Caprese Pastries are a tasty appetizer that reimagines the classic Caprese salad in a crispy, flaky form. These bite-sized eats are perfect for a dinner party, a brunch spread, or a standalone snack. The buttery, flaky puff pastry provides a crisp contrast to the creamy mozzarella and juicy tomatoes. The salty ham adds meatiness, while the fragrant basil adds a touch of green.

Making these Caprese pastries is quick and easy. Ready-made puff pastry forms the base, which is then topped with thinly sliced ham, fresh mozzarella, dry oregano, and basil leaves. Once baked in the oven, you’re greeted with golden, crispy perfection. A drizzle of high-quality balsamic glaze just before serving elevates these bites to an even more sophisticated level. Whether you're hosting a summer garden party or a cozy winter gathering, Caprese Pastries are sure to impress your guests. Their versatility and ease of preparation make them a winning choice for any occasion!

What are Caprese Pastries?

Caprese Pastries are a delicious fusion of Italian flavors and a French pastry technique. They are essentially miniature Caprese salads encased in a buttery, flaky puff pastry shell. The classic Caprese salad, from the island of Capri, Italy, traditionally consists of fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and basil, drizzled with extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Adding puff pastry to this iconic combination elevates the Caprese salad to a new level.

While the Caprese salad is deeply rooted in Italian cuisine, puff pastry originates from France, making Caprese pastries a true culinary fusion. This tasty appetizer is a perfect showcase of contrasting textures and flavors. The crispy, buttery pastry complements the soft mozzarella, while the sweet tomatoes and fragrant basil add a burst of freshness. The inclusion of ham brings a savory element that balances the dish perfectly and also makes it slightly more substantial.

Tips

  • Opt for all-butter puff pastry for the best flavor. The puff pastry should be completely thawed so it’s pliable enough to roll out but still cold. The best is to leave it to thaw overnight in the fridge instead of leaving it on the kitchen counter at room temperature.  If the pastry is too warm, it won’t puff enough. If you live in a warm climate, you can refrigerate the assembled pastries for half an hour before baking.
  • Choose high-quality prosciutto or a good-quality cooked ham, and cut the ham into small, even pieces.
  • Fresh mozzarella is ideal, but a good-quality mozzarella ball will work. Try using different cheeses like burrata or fresh ricotta.
  • Fresh basil is essential for that classic Caprese flavor.
  • Choose ripe, firm tomatoes for the best taste.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pastries to allow them to rise properly.
  • Experiment with flavors by adding balsamic glaze or red pepper flakes.

Can I Add Other Ingredients To The Pastry?

Absolutely! Consider adding sundried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, or even a drizzle of balsamic glaze for extra flavor.

What Kind Of Puff Pastry Should I Use?

All-butter puff pastry is preferred for its rich flavor.

Can I Make The Pastry Ahead Of Time?

Yes, you can assemble the pastries and refrigerate them until ready to bake.

How Do I Prevent The Bottom Of The Pastry From Getting Soggy?

Pre-baking the puff pastry slightly before adding the toppings can help.

Can I Substitute The Ham With Something Else?

Yes, you can try prosciutto, salami, or even grilled chicken.

What Can I Use Instead Of Fresh Mozzarella?

Burrata or fresh ricotta can be delicious substitutes.

How to Store Caprese Pastries

Caprese pastries are best enjoyed fresh from the oven.

However, if you do have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Ingredients

1 roll of puff pastry
8 slices ham
Cherry tomatoes
120g (4.2 oz)
mini mozzarella
140g (5 oz)
dry oregano
Basil
egg for egg wash

How To Make Caprese Pastries

Unroll the puff pastry on a cutting board.

Cut it into 8 equal squares.

Make extra cuts slightly to the insides of the squares approximately the same size as the ham slices.

Place a slice of ham on the center of each square, followed by a few cherry tomato slices, and a few pieces of mozzarella. Sprinkle with dried oregano and a basil leaf.

Transfer the squares to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the edges with a beaten egg wash and bake at 180°C (360°F) for 20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven, then let the pastries cool slightly before serving.
