Is it a snack, or perhaps a clever health food to enjoy as a dessert? We’re not exactly sure, but whatever you categorize it as, you’ll love the chocolatey orange taste of this Chocolate Dipped Orange Peel recipe. The candied orange peel adds a zesty taste, while the chocolate adds creaminess and a touch of sweetness.
To make it, you only need chocolate, oranges, and sugar. The orange peel is first candied to remove the bitterness (don’t skip this step!) and is then covered in dark chocolate. Despite being candied, the orange peel is still slightly chewy, which adds just the right amount of texture to each bite.
Dark chocolate – if your budget allows, you can use high-quality dark chocolate, but baking dark chocolate will also work well.
Oranges – use the peels from fresh, ripe oranges.
Sugar – use regular granulated sugar.
Peel the orange and cut it into strips. Place the strips in cold water in a pot and bring to a boil. Remove the peel and place in another pot with cold water, bring them to a boil again. Repeat this process up to three times in order to remove the bitterness from the peel.
In another saucepan, bring the sugar and water to a boil to create a syrup. Place the peel in the syrup and bring to a boil. Place the peel on a tray and sprinkle with sugar. Melt dark chocolate and cover half of each strip. Place them on parchment paper and allow to set. Enjoy!
It’s important to boil the orange peels long enough to remove the bitterness. If you skip this step, the peels will still be bitter.
When peeling the orange, take care not to remove too much of the white pith. The more pith is left on the peel, the more bitter the peel will be.
Use the leftover syrup in which you boiled the orange peels for another dessert.
Store the Chocolate Dipped Orange Peel in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
If it’s too warm where you live, transfer it to the fridge.
