There's nothing quite like the smell of fresh, warm butter rolls straight out of the oven. These butter rolls are made with a few simple pantry ingredients: flour, yeast, warm milk, butter, and egg. Once mixed, the dough is kneaded until smooth, then left to rise. Once baked, you can enjoy the golden rolls as a side or on their own with a bit of butter. Whether you're a seasoned baker or just starting out in the kitchen, butter rolls are easy to make and a great crowd-pleaser!

What Are Butter Rolls?

Butter rolls (also known as Parker House Rolls) are known as America’s first soft dinner roll. These rich rolls were invented in the 1800s and got their name from the hotel that made them, the Parker House. The recipe involves a lot of butter, milk, and eggs, which makes them rich and flavorful while remaining soft and light.

Tips

– The butter rolls can be made ahead of time. Continue with the recipe up to the point where you place the dough balls in the baking dish. Cover the rolls with plastic wrap and place them in the fridge. When you’re ready to serve them, take them out and allow them to rise for 1 hour before baking.

– Don’t take shortcuts with the rising steps. It will create a soft, fluffy roll.

– If you prefer, you can add herbs or cheese to the butter rolls. Use fresh herbs like chopped basil, thyme, or parsley. To add cheese, wrap the dough balls around a small cube of cheese like cheddar, feta, or mozzarella.

Set the dough aside for 2 hours.

Roll the dough into a large disk and cut into 16 triangles.

Roll each triangle and set the rolls aside until double the size.

Brush with melted butter before serving.

How To Store Butter Rolls

Stored the baked rolls at room temperature (in an airtight container) for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the oven (on low heat) to prevent them from drying out. To freeze them, wrap them tightly with plastic wrap and freeze them for up to 3 months. Thaw the rolls in the fridge and heat up in a low oven for about 10-15 minutes.
