The space under your kitchen sink is one place most people try to avoid looking at because it is usually crammed with odds and ends that make it look messy.

There are many things people dump in this space but it's not all that goes in there that’s supposed to be there. In this article, we explore a list of things that belong there and those that don’t.

The cabinet space under your kitchen sink is one of the easiest places for clutter to build up because of the maze of pipes visible there. We suggest reserving the space for cleaning supplies for the kitchen alone.

That means any other thing outside those supplies needs to go. You can begin by pulling out everything in the cabinet. This will make it easy to take inventory and also clean up any messes you encounter.

Things That Don't Belong Under Your Kitchen Sink

  1. Extra supplies: Your shopping haul should not be in there. The same thing goes for unopened boxes of trash bags, dishwasher tabs, dish soap, and unused items. You can put those in another storage area or a closet.
  2. Dangerous chemicals: This includes powerful cleaners like bleach but chemicals like that don’t belong in such an accessible area. They should be stored in a garage or basement safe out of reach of kids or pets.
  3. Flammable things: These may include solvents, thinners, polishes, paints, and some cleaners that can randomly burst into flames under the right circumstances. They do not belong in the kitchen.
  4. Kitchen towels and paper bags: It may be convenient to throw this under the sink but they don’t belong there because a leak could ruin them.
  5. Pet food: This should not be under the sink because humidity is usually increased which can cause the food to grow mold and mildew. If chemicals are stored there too, they can contaminate pet food.

Things That Can Be Stored Under The Kitchen Sink

  1. Organisation tools: These may include pullout trays, tension rods, s-hooks or even baskets and they can be put under the sink where they can easily be reached when needed.
  2. Ab absorbent mat: This can be laid across the bottom of the kitchen sink as it can hold a fair amount of water in case of leakage. This will prevent a mess and protect your cabinet from the growth of mold.
  3. Cleaning products: You can store cleaning products like cleaning vinegar, dish soap, and scouring products under the sink. This makes it easier to reach them and makes it easier to remember to replace them.
  4. A small fire extinguisher: No kitchen is complete without one of these. It protects against occasions like grease fires or even potentially worse accidents with fire. Keeping it in an accessible place like under the kitchen sink will certainly help.
  5. Handy tools: Handy tools can also go under the sink. They may be needed in a jiffy and reaching them easily will save time.
