Coffee is pretty much a ‘silent alarm’ that we all need to wake up in the morning every day. It is not only one of the most popular beverages available, but coffee offers several health benefits as well. Read on to know why coffee shouldn’t be consumed when your stomach is empty.

Coffee is usually consumed first thing in the morning when our stomach is empty. Its high caffeine content has been studied to improve the functioning of the brain, enhance exercise performance, and boost the mood. It also protects against heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Here are a few reasons to enjoy coffee but never on an empty stomach.

Effect on the stomach. According to research, bitterness in coffee can produce stomach acids that can irritate the stomach lining and worsen the symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).

Effect on stress hormones. It has been found that sipping this beverage on an empty stomach triggers increased secretion of the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol to excessive levels. This can result in bone loss, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart diseases.

It is addictive. Consuming a large dose of caffeine first thing in the morning may result in coffee addiction. An excessive amount of caffeine intake can lead to restlessness, anxiety, worsening of panic attacks, migraine, headache, high blood pressure, and heart palpations.
